NWS says that the local mountains will get 4 to 6 feet of snow by Sunday, and the rain will bring the San Diego River in Mission Valley to near flood-stage this weekend.
The explosive winds that caused power outages, downed trees and treacherous driving conditions across San Diego County Wednesday will be followed Thursday by heavy snow, very cold temperatures and possibly worse conditions later in the week, the National Weather Service said.
Forecasters said the rain will elevate the risk of rock and mud slides from the coast to the mountains, including long after the storm has passed. The weather also is expected to delay the start of seasonal play for many Little League teams across the region. At the dead end of Marine Street in La Jolla, overlooking the Marine Street Beach, a motorist stopped to take pictures of the high surf Wednesday.“These were the strongest winds I’ve seen out there in the nearly 23 years I’ve worked here,” said Phil Gonsalves, a weather service forecaster.
Gerald and Melba Kooyman, who live in the Torrey Pines neighborhood of San Diego, awoke to a loud crashing noise and found glass from a broken light fixture on the foot of their bed around 2:45 a.m. It wasn’t until police and fire crews arrived that the couple realized a large pine tree had fallen onto their home on Via Grimaldi, north of Carmel Valley Road. The couple was uninjured, but the home was damaged.
