Patients, their families and staff at Vista Medical Center East now have a place to de-stress adjacent to the hospital at the newly renovated Victory Park — a healing garden.

While playgrounds, athletic fields and fitness facilities are part of several or more parks, park district Executive Director Jay Lerner said Victory Park is the only one with a healing garden. He said members of the park district staff suggested it when the renovation was being planned.“It’s adjacent to the hospital,” Lerner said. “It’s a good place to sit and have a relaxing moment.”

A circular planter with soil is between the stone walls. A fountain is in the center inside the planter’s interior wall. Among the places to sit are three adult swinging benches. Vista Health Systems CEO Jon Rozenfeld said he has already had lunch there with colleagues. Rozenfeld said he anticipates the healing garden will be a place patients who are able, their families and hospital staff will frequent when they can. He expects people affiliated with the hospital will be taking advantage of the area.

Lerner said the $1.2 million project was community based with just over 40% of the funding coming from private sources, with the foundation playing an active role. A $400,000 grant came from the state’s Open Space Land Acquisition and Development Program, and $10,000 was given by the city of Waukegan’s block grant program.
