The curtains that separated beds in the emergency room at Middlesex General Hospital early on the morning of May 2, 1973 were no match for the moans and wails of pain. They came from New Jersey State Trooper James Harper in one bed, as he dealt with bullet wounds to his left shoulder and arm from a gun battle he’d just survived during a traffic stop on the New Jersey Turnpike in East Brunswick.
