Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe pays tribute to the late Robbie Coltrane: “Robbie was one of the funniest people I’ve met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on the set.'
Harry Potter lead actor Daniel Radcliffe has shared a touching statement on the death of Robbie Coltrane, who played Hogwarts' gamekeeper, Rubeus Hagrid. The Hagrid character was an ally of Harry's, recognizable for his impossibly large size and jolly accent.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Though the Harry Potter movies wrapped up in 2011, the franchise continues to hold a special place in the hearts of viewers and the actors who were involved. After working together for so many years, the Harry Potter cast shares a meaningful bond with each other, as evidenced by the recent Harry Potter 20th anniversary reunion special. In the movies, Harry and Hagrid were very close, a dynamic that carried offscreen between Radcliffe and Coltrane.
“Robbie was one of the funniest people I’ve met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on the set. I’ve especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on Prisoner of Azkaban, when we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid’s hut and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up. I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he’s passed. He was an incredible actor and a lovely man.
Daniel Radcliffe & Robbie Coltrane's Relationship Mirrors Harry & Hagrid Hagrid serves as a mentor to Harry, and the relationship is one of the most adored in the franchise. Hagrid's unforgettable introduction in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone put fear into Harry as the behemoth man stood in the threshold of the family's doorway, forcing Harry to wonder if wizarding is a safe pursuit; but, in time, Hagrid's good nature revealed the man to be a gentle giant.
Hagrid and Harry's relationship is more than just endearing, it's a narratively useful tool that frequently drove the plot. Hagrid often gave away secrets about magical animals and the doings of the Hogwarts staff to Harry, Hermoine , and Ron , piquing their curiosity and inspiring them to explore what they don't know. The character's charmingly oafish line "I should not have said that," preceded Harry and the gang heading into well-intending mischief.
