I hope you don’t get the wrong impression. Despite that quirky circumstance, accidentally discovered early in my ownership of a pair of Bertoia’s chairs, I am crazy about the furniture designed by the prolific sculptor and artist. In fact, it was precisely those two chairs that touched off my hobby of collecting modern chairs designed by famous architects — a passion that hasn’t let up yet.
Life with my strange chairs was good — but I still didn’t know anything about them. One day, while running a Windex-soaked paper towel over all those chromed rods to shine them up, I discovered a small, rectangular decal under one of the chairs, stuck to the orange cover: Knoll Associates Inc. I couldn’t get to the local library fast enough. Whirring through microfiche and thumbing feverishly through design books, I discovered who designed my chairs — and that they had a name.
