Published: Oct. 08, 2023, 10:13 p.m.A cornhole tournament is planned on Oct. 14 in Harrisburg that will feature more than $2,200 in cash prizes, with the proceeds being directed toward helping veterans experiencing homelessness.
The Amateur Cornhole Tournament is sponsored by Perseverance Lodge #21, The Valley of Harrisburg A.A.S.R and American Legion Post 109 with funds raised for veterans in need of shelter and support through the 501 Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania, the nonprofit organization building 15 tiny homes and a community center in southern Harrisburg.
The tournament has room for 80 teams. Bags will start to fly at 9 a.m. and continue until 6 p.m. at Scottish Rite Theatre on 2701 N. Third St., Harrisburg. The cost per team is $100 and includes two chicken dinners. Additional food and beverages will be available for purchase. First prize is $1,000, and second place is $500, with added cash prizes for other rankings.Tom Zimmerman, president and co-founder of VOPA, said, “Now that we broke ground on Veterans Grove in June, we need the community’s help more than ever so that we can begin sheltering and supporting veterans by early 2024.
