Four people suing former San Diego City Clerk Liz Maland for age and racial discrimination must continue their legal efforts against her separately, a judge has ruled.
Former San Diego City Clerk Liz Maland is accused of denying her employees promotions if she considered them too old or if they weren’t White or Hispanic, according to a lawsuit.
The suit also says Maland harassed workers by making demeaning remarks such as “I own you,” and retaliated against workers if they complained about her behavior. City clerk is a high-level position that includes overseeing city elections, organizing City Council agendas, managing records with a focus on transparency and processing applications for U.S. passports.
Maland is also accused of frequently making demeaning remarks to the employees and others at work. That included saying “I own you” to a employee whose heritage has a history of slavery, the suit says.
