To say that Hamish Bowles’s tastes lean toward the maximalist is something of an understatement. “I’m so impressed by anyone who lives in a sensory-deprivation tank,” says the legendary. “But as you can see, that’s not my approach.
It all began, he explains, when he connected with his close friends Laura Sartori Rimini and Roberto Peregalli of the Milanese interior-design firm Studio Peregalli, as they were looking to introduce their brand of classic Italian opulence to an American audience. Given Bowles’s role as’s international editor at large, however, every corner is infused with both his erudite eye for style and his enduring love for travel.
Most delightful of all are the backstories that accompany every object and architectural detail that fill Bowles’s lavishly decorated home, whether a set of curtains from the storied French textile manufacturer Tassinari & Châtel that were originally woven for Marie Antoinette or the walls, which are covered with a deep purple Loro Piana brushed cotton and hung with costume sketches and architectural drawings. “Purple,” Bowles sighs.
