Learn about the alarming impact of plastic pollution on loggerhead turtles. Find out how plastic items are getting trapped in their bodies.
In a study spanning 11 years, a research team found bizarre plastic items stuck in loggerhead turtles’ bodies. The items ranged from the top covers of the plastic bottle to a part of a Halloween toy.
“The journey of that Halloween toy—from a child’s costume to the inside of a sea turtle—is a fascinating glimpse into the life cycle of plastic,”Dr. Emily Duncan from Centre for Ecology and Conservation on Exeter’s Penryn Campus in Cornwall and the co-author of the study.They found that of the 131 loggerhead turtles they studied from 2012 to 2022, approximately 42.7 percent had ingested some plastic.
So, researchers studied turtles in this region to understand how much plastic they’re eating and what types. Most ingested plastics are sheet-like, possibly from plastic bags and food packaging, consistent with findings in other regions and species.
