Though Hailey's doctors believed these three factors simply created a “perfect storm” for the blood clot to occur, Hailey visited another set of doctors for a second opinion and further testing. It was soon discovered that Hailey had a Patent Foramen Ovale , a hole in the heart that typically closes on its own after birth.
The final medical conclusion was that Hailey experienced a blood clot that traveled to her heart and escaped through her PFO, then traveled to her brain, causing a mini stroke. Hailey was recommended by her doctors to undergo surgery to close her PFO, through a procedure done through a vein in the groin, in which a “small little button” is embedded in the PFO to close it.
“The biggest thing I feel is I just feel really relieved that we were able to figure everything out,” Hailey added, explaining that her anxiety made the ordeal more difficult to bear. "That we were able to get it closed, that I will be able to move on from this really scary situation and just live my life."
