DESPITE the high possibility of El Niño happening this year, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the northeast monsoon or habagat may still happen in the next few weeks.
The bureau has issued an El Niño Southern Oscillation alert, which signifies the possibility of El Niño from June to August lasting until the first quarter of 2024.Thelma Cinco, chief of the Climatology and the Agrometeorology division of the weather bureau, said the onset of the wet season remains on track to begin later this month due to the presence of a southwesterly wind flow.The northeast monsoon usually begins in June and ends around September or October.
'Usually, we can expect normal and enhanced northeast monsoons during the predevelopment period of El Niño,' Cinco said in a televised briefing.El Niño forecasts continue to sway towards a 'weak to moderate' phenomenon, but Cinco said that a strong El Niño may happen in the latter part of 2023.She said that it is not yet certain if there will be rainfall in the first quarter of 2024.
