While it's a remarkable aspect of biological nature, there are instances when this process goes awry, potentially resulting in a serious and life-threatening condition called intestinal malrotation.

To understand the underlying process, the researchers began by studying intestine rotation during normal frog growth. Interestingly, the embryos appear transparent during intestinal development, giving researchers a unique opportunity to closely observe the process. In turn, this metabolic imbalance interfered with a series of cellular processes in the developing gut. As a result, the damaged cells were unable to coordinate the phases of growth, division, and rearrangement, preventing appropriate elongation and rotation of the intestine.
