Guns rights advocates criticized a proposal to ban a wide array of guns and high capacity magazines in Illinois as a “dangerous” measure that will make criminals out of law-abiding gun owners

Longtime gun rights lobbyist Todd Vandermyde testifies Dec. 20, 2022, during a hearing about gun legislation in front of an Illinois House committee at the Michael A. Bilandic Building.

The sale of high-capacity ammunition magazines would also be banned and people under 21 would be barred from getting gun permits unless they’re in the military under the proposal “The legislation will not work because it’s been tried and failed,” Weber said. “More importantly, this bill’s dangerous and places an undue constitutional burden on a person’s ability to provide for their self-defense.”

Vandermyde said it’s unfair for someone like him to have to give up his rights to own certain guns because of people who traffic in illegal guns or use them to commit violent crimes. The legislation would also ban the use of “switches” that allow guns to be converted from semi-automatic use — when bullets are fired through a single trigger pull — to automatic use — when one trigger pull can fire multiple bullets at once.Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart holds photos of confiscated weapons while testifying, Dec. 20, 2022, during a hearing about gun legislation in front of an Illinois House committee in Chicago.
