"Let us honor Rafaela Vicente, 109 yrs old, who served as a guerilla during WWII and worked as a government nurse. Salute !" Guanzon, a former Commission on Elections commissioner, tweeted on Monday.
That Vicente is the second oldest living World War II veteran has been confirmed by the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office or PVAO. Araw ng Kagitingan is a regular holiday celebrated every April 9 by virtue of Executive Order No. 203, s. 1987 to remember the fall of Bataan to Japanese troops on April 9, 1942.
For this year, the actual day of the event fell on Easter Sunday, causing Malacañang to declare a holiday the next day, April 10.
