Yankees manager Aaron Boone argued with umpires and was ejected in the first inning Wednesday as the Cleveland Guardians scored two early runs against New York at Progressive Field.

Boone was upset after umpires allowed Guardians manager Terry Francona to challenge a play that was originally ruled a catch by Aaron Hicks on a pop to shallow center field. Hicks appeared to make the catch before quickly throwing to second base to double up José Ramírez and end the inning. But video replay on the outfield scoreboard clearly showed that the ball had bounced off the turf after deflecting out of Hicks’ glove. After Yankees defenders left the field, crew chief Larry Vanover met for more than three minutes between the mound and home plate and finally decided to allow Cleveland’s challenge.
