James Karinchak could rejoin Cleveland's roster Friday with Michael Kelly heading to the injured list.
. Reliever Michael Kelly is heading to the 10-day injured list with back spasms, according to manager Terry Francona., walking 11 and striking out 34 in 19 1/3 innings during that stretch while allowing 11 earned runs, including one home run. Karinchak struggled through the first two months of the season with Cleveland, walking 19 and serving up six home runs in 27 2/3 innings across 32 outings.
Francona said Karinchak has made progress with Columbus, but has been “a little inconsistent.” The hope is that a return to the big league roster will prompt an uptick in his results and bolster a Guardians bullpen that suddenly finds itself in a state of flux. ”We could use a good James Karinchak, that would be good,” Francona said. “Hopefully he can figure it out while he’s here.”
Kelly was unavailable Wednesday against Cincinnati after going through pregame workouts and experiencing tightness in his back. “He stood up and he got pretty intense back spasms,” Francona said. “It doesn’t look like he would probably be available in the next three or four days, so we went ahead and IL’d him.”
