Gremlins went through many different scripts before landing on its final story, but the original would've ruined the film if not for Spielberg.

Gremlins is known for its delicate balance of darkness and lightheartedness, but the movie was almost completely ruined by its original script. Gremlins went through all kinds of different drafts before arriving at its final story, with the original concept for the movie varying wildly from the final product. While Gremlins is beloved now, that was nearly not the case, with the film's story only being saved by Steven Spielberg.

Gremlins is director Joe Dante's iconic 1984 horror comedy movie that spawned a sequel, an animated TV series, and tons of merchandise. The franchise is known for pushing the line of what is allowed in kids movies, with Gremlins directly contributing to the creation of the PG-13 rating. With rumors of a Gremlins 3 in development, the franchise is still incredibly popular to this day.

It is a good thing that Gremlins switched Gizmo's role in the story, as him being the villain would have ruined the movie. Gizmo is incredibly lovable and adorable, and having him turn into a gremlin would have ruined his charm. On top of that, Gizmo is the cute marketable mascot of the series, and the Gremlins franchise may not have been as popular if it was not for Gizmo remaining a hero.

How Steven Spielberg Saved Gremlins While Gremlins looked dead set on making Gizmo its villain, one person stepped in to save the film from near disaster: Steven Spielberg. Although Spielberg did not direct Gremlins, he was an executive producer, being the person who initially wanted to turn the story into a film. Gremlins is full of Steven Spielberg Easter eggs, with the film containing references to his other movies, and even featuring a cameo from Spielberg himself.

In a 2002 DVD commentary, director Joe Dante explained that Spielberg put his foot down and overruled Gizmo turning into a gremlin, despite giving Dante creative control in almost every other aspect. Spielberg believed that Gizmo was too cute and that transforming him would disappoint and alienate audiences. Spielberg was completely right in believing this, with his request to change Gizmo from a villain into a hero being the decision that saved Gremlins.
