Sheryl Crow and Bonnie Raitt also joined a performance of “Songbird,” the signature song of Fleetwood Mac’s Christine McVie who died in November.
In Memoriam segment this year featured both live and recorded performances as a slideshow of singers, musicians, recording executives and other music industry figures who died over the past year appeared on screen.
The segment opened with country singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves singing “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” the signature song of the late Loretta Lynn as the faces of music stars including Naomi Judd and Olivia Newton-John flashed behind her. After footage of guitarist Jeff Beck playing “Beck’s Bolero” accompanied the images of musicians including Tom Verlaine and Pharaoh Sanders, rapper Quavo of the group Migos sang “Without You,” a song he wrote after the shooting death of his nephew, Takeoff, who was also part of Migos.
Footage of David Crosby singing the Crosby, Stills and Nash song “Guinnevere” accompanied more names and faces. The memorial segment wrapped up with Mick Fleetwood playing a hand drum as Sheryl Crow and Bonnie Raitt sang “Songbird,” the signature tune of the late Christine McVie, a longtime member of Fleetwood’s band, Fleetwood Mac, as the faces of artists such as McVie, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Terry Hall of the Specials appeared.
