If confirmed by the Ohio Senate, John Williams will replace Beth Trombold, who recently stepped down. Williams is not affiliated with any political party.
The other candidates on theWilliams may get a pay raise as a commissioner. He currently earns $136,000. The salary range falls between $73,715 to $213,865 a year plus state benefits. A spokesman for DeWine said Williams’ salary has not been finalized.Williams, who has a civil engineering degree, began his career at PUCO in 2002 as a gas pipeline safety compliance investigator.
The PUCO reviews and accepts or rejects rate hikes by Ohio’s utilities. It has faced criticism as being too cozy to the industry it’s supposed to regulate. In 2020, Sam Randazzo, its former chairman, resigned from PUCO after FBI agents raided his home. FirstEnergy Corp. just before DeWine appointed him. He has not been charged with a crime and denies wrongdoing. The PUCO’s four investigations into the matter have produced little of substance.against former Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder and former Ohio GOP Chair Matt Borges, in connection to $60 million paid to an account that federal prosecutors say was used to get House Bill 6 passed. The bill was supposed to bail out FirstEnergy’s two nuclear power plants.
