Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, penned an op-ed Monday claiming that she won't"sit on my hands waiting for Congress to do something" to protect the ability for women to get abortions.
If something isn't done immediately, she wrote,"Americans will suffer and may die," adding,"Most will be poor. A sizable contingent will be women of color."After reading a recently leaked draft opinion revealing that the Supreme Court will likely decide to overturn Roe v. Wade in the coming months, Whitmer said she was"devastated.
She explained that she may have a hard time attempting to codify a right to abortion into Michigan law. However, she encouraged governors and lawmakers who are better positioned than her to do so quickly. She spelled out"legislation, executive action, ballot initiative or civic engagement" as options to combat laws that prevent abortions."The answer is to get creative."
Whitmer further commended companies such as"Amazon, Citigroup, Levi Strauss and Yelp" for funding employees' travel expenses to terminate pregnancies. She also mentioned"Lyft and Uber," which will pay legal fees for drivers who transport women to abortion clinics knowingly in states where they can be sued.CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER
