$350 million for rural sheriffs, constables and prosecutors will address a 'crisis' in...
Governor Greg Abbot center, after signing HB:28: The Todd Hogland Act, one of eight bills signed during a public safety bill signing ceremony in his press conference room at the Texas State Capitol on Tuesday, June 6, 2023., along with several other bills that heighten criminal penalties in an effort to deter crime.
Though HB 17 drew some bipartisan support, the majority of Democrats opposed it, with many arguing it was unconstitutional and overly vague. Other bills signed into law Tuesday received broader support, including one that provides $350 million for rural sheriffs, constables and prosecutors. Kevin Lawrence, executive director of the Texas Municipal Police Association, said he hopes the bill will help agencies manage “the crisis we’re having in recruiting and retaining qualified law enforcement officers.”
