The governor’s tweet about board President Joseph Komrosky comes days after Newsom warned against the banning of books.
“Access to books — including books that reflect the diverse experiences and perspectives of Californians, and especially those that may challenge us to grapple with uncomfortable truths — is a profound freedom we all must protect and cultivate,” the letter states.
Messages seeking information about what might be asked of the Temecula Valley Unified School District were left Monday with the offices of Newsom and the Attorney General. On May 16, the conservative Christian majority on the Temecula Valley school board blocked a social studies curriculumTemecula Valley Unified officials proposed that the school board adopt a book called Social Studies Alive for students in first through fifth grades for eight years. The textbook would have been used starting with the 2023-24 school year and cost about $1.6 million, according to a report to the board.
Along with Komrosky, the two other members of the board’s new conservative bloc raised concerns. Board member Jen Wiersma said teachers do not need to teach about LGBTQ issues and sexual orientation in kindergarten through fifth grade.
