We chat with GothamKnights costume designer Jennifer May Nickel (JMNDesigns) about her work on the show, some of the most rewarding moments of designing DC character costumes, and the importance of storytelling through wardrobe:
Warning: Possible spoilers for Gotham Knights below!The CW's Gotham Knights is the network's latest DC comics-based show, following the adventures of its eponymous group of young heroes. For Gotham Knights, costume designer Jennifer May Nickel is tasked with bringing each character's attire to life. With the various backgrounds and origins of the characters of Gotham Knights, Mrs. Nickel has quite a diversified approach to creating the costumes of each character.
Jennifer May Nickel: The process varies greatly, depending on which character it is. Some of our characters are a little more off the rack, and some are more custom-made, and it also varies with the classes on the show. In Gotham, we have very, very rich, upper crust characters, and we have our characters who come from the streets and are also on the run from the law, which are our Knights.
On Gotham Knights, you also used some fabric from Heath Ledger's Joker costume from The Dark Knight. How did that come about? I obviously got it, and then a few months went by, because we were looking for the perfect place to put it. The script for episode 9 came, and there's a moment where Duela puts on this jacket that is lined in green just like Heath's in The Dark Knight. So, it was like 'Oh, this is where this needs to go, and it needs to be the lining of the jacket.
