The last of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies is taking cues from the Thor series and flipping one franchise trend completely on its head.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 appears to be completely subverting a common criticism of the Thor franchise in its later years, which could help the final film in James Gunn's trilogy of space-faring adventures end on a high note.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The MCU's Phase 4 derived heavy criticism during its two-year run, with films like Eternals and Thor: Love and Thunder receiving particularly harsh pushback. Phase 5, on the other hand, promises a better future ahead for the franchise, beginning with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's introduction of Kang the Conqueror.
Guardians of the Galaxy was always a more comedic franchise, with the first two films therein providing a far less dramatic backdrop to their individual stories than other MCU projects. The third film appears to change that, with several Guardians of the Galaxy rumored to die before the credits roll.
Guardians' Humor Can Make The Drama Land Even Better While some might worry that Guardians 3's tonal shift could negatively affect the film, the humor of the franchise could actually help the drama of the third installment land even better. Humor is often used to offset the more emotional moments in a film, lulling audiences into a false sense of security before the big gut punch occurs in the final act.
The humor of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise isn't just meant to offset tragedy, however. Much like the Guardians discovered friendship and family with one another, audiences find something similar in the characters whom they have watched grow over the last nine years. Even if the upcoming film ends in tragedy, the memories of the characters lost therein are happy ones, full of laughter and joy.
