Billions of Chrome users suddenly have an exciting new update—but it comes with a catch, and so beware Google’s new warning before you use this..., it’s easy to get carried away. But all these AI platforms and services come with a catch—and you need to be very careful.

So it is with Google’s new Chrome update, which had added a Gemini AI prompt directly into the address bar—what could be easier, right? But unlike old-style algorithmic search, which clearly isn’t private but is buried in amongst billions of other queries, Gemini’s Chrome prompts might be read by a real life person., “or any data you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our products, services, and machine-learning technologies.

All of which means—don’t get carried away. Be wary of health, financial. sexual queries, or anything else that you would not be happy being read by that real life reviewer. And this isn’t just a Google issue, of course. The privacy risk applies to other cloud-centric AI platforms, including from Microsoft, OpenAI, and everyone else.In recent years, privacy has gone from an afterthought to a competitive differentiator.

The spider’s web of privacy policies by platform and service are difficult to navigate. Google alone has different polices for different AI services, platforms, commercial models. What we need above al is simplicity and clarity. Cue Apple..., meaning no prompts are forwarded, stored or reviewed, then the hope is that this brings some of that much needed change. Clearly, this won’t impact web searches, which by their very nature need to be shared—but it will improve user understanding.

None of this is hidden—Google is being open in its warnings. This is now a user issue and the millions diving into these exciting new services need to get themselves aware and fast. We will inevitably see data compromises and breaches with AI services as they expand rapidly. And so—as ever, we all need to be careful what we share.
