The most complete remains of a mummified infant woolly mammoth were found in North America.
Gold miners in the Yukon uncovered a mummified baby woolly mammoth on June 21. The near-complete baby mammoth, named Nun cho ga — ‘big baby animal’ in Hän language — by Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin Elders was discovered in the Klondike gold fields in the Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin Traditional Territory.
The Yukon is rich in ice age era fossils, however, finding one with skin and hair is rare. This is the most complete mummified mammoth to be found in North America. Geologists from the Yukon Geological Survey and the University of Calgary examined the remains. Their findings suggest that Nun cho ga is female and died around 30,000 years ago. Researchers also determined that Nun cho ga is roughly the same size as “,” the 42,000-year-old remains of an infant mummified woolly mammoth discovered in Syria in 2007.
