Mary Ahern, a 10-year-old from Glenview, received the thrill of a lifetime when she was invited to serve as honorary 'bat kid' at the Chicago Cubs game against the Baltimore Orioles on June 16 after being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes earlier this year.

Ahern, a softball player and a Cubs fan, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes earlier this year and was a patient at Advocate Children's Hospital in Park Ridge.

In the last four months, the softball player and rising fifth grader has adjusted well to her condition and admirably tackled the new responsibilities that accompany living with Type 1 diabetes, her mother said. “She knows that she’s just the kid that might have to take a break, and sit out for an inning, and drink her juice, and then get back in there,” she said. “The players were super kind to both kids.
