The Pacers saw some signs of a functional formula to win a game without Tyrese Haliburton on Saturday, but still lost their seventh straight game.

It was consecutive loss No. 7, a streak that goes back to Jan. 11, the night

The Pacers haven't actually figured out what getting that next win is going to take, and they don't know exactly how much longer they'll be waiting for their likely All-Star to return. Carlisle said Friday that Haliburton's knee feels fine and the elbow feels better, but Haliburton said earlier this week on the Old Man and the Three Podcast hosted by former NBA sharpshooter J.J. Reddick that he views the beginning of February as the target date for his return.

Since Haliburton has been injured, McConnell is arguably the Pacers' most effective player. In 18.6 minutes per game this season, he's averaging 6.9 points, 4.8 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game. But in the Pacers' last six games without Haliburton, he's averaging 15.2 points on 63.9% shooting, 8.5 assists, 5.5 rebounds per game in 27.3 minutes.

McConnell helps solve a number of the Pacers recent problems. He makes the Pacers' starting lineup much stronger defensively. He's made his career as a defensive pest with 662 career steals, including an NBA-leading 128 in 2020-21. Nembhard and wing Aaron Nesmith have established themselves as the Pacers' two best options for guarding top-line perimeter players this season and center Myles Turner is one of the NBA's best shot blockers.

"I love playing with other ball-handlers like T.J. and Ty," Nembhard said."I felt comfortable. I love playing off guys who can make plays for others as well as themselves. I love playing with T.J. When you have less touches on offense, put a little less energy to the offense you can lock in a little more on your defensive assignment and make it tougher on guys."
