Germany’s climate menu mixes small beer and fudge edwardcropley
Germany’s ruling coalition agreed a package of measures on Sept. 20 to reduce greenhouse gas output from Europe’s biggest economy, Reuters reported.
A surge in support for the Green Party has forced Chancellor Angela Merkel’s ruling coalition to renew efforts to meet a commitment to reduce CO2 emissions by 55% from 1990 levels by 2030. Under the proposals, the government will expand a carbon emissions trading scheme to include housing and transport, with the price linked to the current traded price of carbon, currently around 26 euros per tonne, Reuters reported on Sept. 20.
Berlin is also planning a finance package worth 50 billion euros over four years to cushion the switch from fossil fuels. Reuters reported that the package would be financed without new debt issuance to satisfy Germany’s rigid rules on state borrowing and spending. Hundreds of thousands of students, office workers and other protesters took to the streets across the globe on Sept. 20 to demand world leaders do more to tackle climate change.
