Both Frank Tyson and George Floyd died after being knelt on by a police officer and both men’s last words were: “I can’t breathe.”

Nationally-known civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents Tyson’s family and previously represented Floyd’s family, spoke Thursday at a packed St. Paul AME Church in Canton filled with Tyson’s family and friends.

Bobby DiCello, a Cleveland-area attorney, who also represents Tyson’s family, called the case “George Floyd 2.0.” “I can’t breathe. You’re on my neck. I can’t breathe,” were Tyson’s last words, according to the body camera video.Tyson went unconscious and died. His death drew comparisons to the May 2020 death of Floyd who was murdered by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, sparking a national debate about police violence.DiCello during the news conference ripped up a copy of Canton police’s use of force policy.

“This tragedy is yet another devastating reminder of the urgent need for transparency, accountability, and reform within our policing systems,” his post said. Tyson’s death came about two weeks after he was released from prison on April 6 after serving 24 years for kidnapping, burglary, failing to comply with an officer, receiving stolen property and grand theft of a motor vehicle in November 2000.

Tyson’s family, including his brothers, cousins and niece, said they were happy to be reunited with him after he was released from prison.
