Surgeons at the University of Alabama at Birmingham implanted a genetically-modified pig’s kidneys into a brain-dead patient named Jim Parsons on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2021.

The surgical team got permission from Parsons’ family. The experimental medical first could revolutionize organ donations, due to a shortage of human organs leading to years of waiting for those in need.

The surgery is part of a xenotransplantation field, where animal organs serve as genetically-altered substitutes for human organs. Dr. Paige Porrett is the director of clinical translational research for the Comprehensive Transplant Institute at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s surgery department. Porrett said via“We’re talking about the life’s work of a lot of researchers, scientists,” Porrett added, according to. “The hope of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of patients who we haven’t met yet were depending on this to work.

The surgeons remained nervous as they waited to see if the kidneys would turn black in minutes, a sign the implant didn’t work and Parsons’ body rejected the kidneys. Though the kidneys turned pink and 23 minutes later the kidneys produced urine, making the surgery a success.
