The performer, who plays Shoeshine Charley's Big Time Lounge Saturday with the Wheel Workers, has released a novel based on his travels and the album 'Persevere.
“Over the years I had so [many] journals, I didn’t want to throw ’em away,” Kuhn says. “I’m traveling around with backpack and guitar, but the heaviest thing I have is a bag full of journals. I’d go somewhere and leave it there and then come back for ‘em.”
“Persevere,” meanwhile, is spacey and opaque, closer in spirit to Kurt Vile or The War On Drugs than the gruff yet vulnerable typical Texas-songwriter fare. Yet there’s something unmistakably Galveston about it. The sinewy “Shake Attack” sounds like Love and Rockets learning to surf; “Walk On” radiates warmth like a slow island sunrise.
Coming off several weeks of touring the Midwest and East Coast, Kuhn expects to be home for a good while. He had some good shows in Nashville, where he shared a bill with Kentuckian critic’s fave Chris Knight; and Connecticut, where a friend set Kuhn up to go quail hunting in South Texas with Robert Earl Keen.
