About three in 10 U.S. adults reported attending religious services weekly, down from 42% two decades ago.
While religious services bring in big crowds for Ramadan, Passover and Easter, a recent study shows faith groups across the board have seen a decline in regular attendance in the United States. About three in 10 U.S. adults reported attending religious services every week from 2021 to 2023, down from 42% two decades ago, according to a survey published this month by Gallup.
The company compared the results with data from 2000 to 2003 and 2011 to 2013 to assess changes in religious service attendance over time, finding a continual drop in the percentage of adults who regularly attend. Gallup attributes the downward trend largely to the upsurge in Americans with no religious affiliation, which has grown from 9% in 2000-2003 to 21% in 2021-2023.
