“We believe we are close to an agreement, but unless we make real progress soon, we will have to reconsider our decision to suspend our strike,” the president of one union said.

While bargaining issues remained, the unions agreed to suspend — but not end —their five-day strike, the first of its kind in the state university’s 257-year history. They noted that agreements with all three faculty unions would be required before the strike could end permanently. Health insurance for part-time lecturers is another sticking point, said Rutgers Adjunct Faculty Union President Amy Higer.
“It’s the same old Rutgers, waiting days upon days to respond, not bargaining the whole day, not moving fast, and we’re really upset. These are important issues, and we feel they’re back to their running-out-the-clock strategy.”
