Columnist Marla Jo Fisher gives some straight talk about raising boys.

I recently acquired my first grandchild. And he’s a boy.

Firstly, he’s kinetic in a way that his sister never was. If I had to choose a church for him, it would definitely have been Our Lady of Perpetual Motion. The blocks were short, and my son enjoyed racing past us while being careful to always stop and wait at the light.Often, people would turn and say to me, “Why do you let him run like that?”In fact, I actually wanted him to run, because it might make a slight dent in his ability to get tired by bedtime.

I still remember telling her to go clean up her room and being ignored. She was four years old. After the third request, I was getting a tad testy. Finally, she turned around, exasperated, and said, “Mommy! Can’t youOh, my. Well, excuse me. Maybe you can remember that feeling the next time I’m doing something, like fruitlessly trying to talk on the phone to my friends without being interrupted every nine nanoseconds.

After the screaming died down , I carefully explained to Cheetah Boy that he could kill himself doing this. I even took him to his pediatrician to explain this, who had the best line ever.
