After three days of competition and 17 teams, the first Pony tournament of the summer will have Friendswood meeting Southbelt for the crown
Bryce Lee, a member of the Friendswood 7U Blue all-stars, enjoys a cup of Italian Ice after a Saturday game at the Spencerview Athletic Complex. The guys played a pair of 8U teams this weekend.DEER PARK - The book will be titled"How to Teach 8-year-olds to Catch Fly Balls" and it will be available for purchase through Amazon later this month.
Friendswood will be the underdog for the 6 p.m. contest back at Cummins Field because their opponent, Southbelt, defeated Manager Dionne Gerety's crew 7-0 earlier Sunday. But in the two wins over Deer Park, the defense was close to superb. Whether the balls were hit on the ground or in the air, Friendswood played sharp. Deer Park hit 14 fly balls in the two contests and Friendswood caught 13 of the 14 attempts for a 93 percent success rate.
The lone fly ball hiccup came Sunday. With coaches throwing to their respective batters, a Friendswood"pitcher" dropped a fly ball. Were it not for that error, Deer Park may not have scored any runs that inning. That one-out miscue led to three straight Deer Park hits and a score. But the inning ended when second baseman Shepard King smothered a hard-hit grounder and threw to first.
Friendswood retired the last nine batters. An infield single to start the fourth would be Deer Park's last man to get on.
