MemorialDay is a time to honor those who have died in brave service to our country. Today, we're also remembering 4 civilian weather observers who disappeared during World War II -- and finally received their Purple Hearts in 2015. Their story:
were quick to respond. On August 24, 1942, their ship, the Muskeget, departed Boston on the way to Weather Station No. 2 in the North Atlantic. During their time in the area, the four civilian volunteers took weather observations to aid safe navigation by vessels containing troops, fuel, munitions, and supplies, and the ship sent those out as coded messages. Then on September 9, all communication stopped abruptly.
The USS Muskeget, formerly the USS YAG-9, at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in March 1942, six months before it was sunk by a German submarine in the North Atlantic during World War II.
