Kerley comes from a humble background, raised by his aunt along with 12 other children

He is famously allergic to media interviews, only granting them when required and even then providing one- or two-word answers. After ripping off a 9.79 Friday night — the fastest ever in a preliminary round in World Championships history — he zoomed through the interview area without stopping, like the meet’s nightly flyover of military jets.
Kerley got his first tattoo at age 12, a Bible scripture. He has more than 10 now, including one that says, “Bless” — a tribute, he says, to “the way my life has turned out.” “The difference for me was my mindset. From an early age, I said I can’t do that, can’t end up like them. I didn’t want my future to stay in one place. I wanted to get an education and travel all over the world and just keep on going. Track and field was the sport that allowed me to do that.”
