Before the best golfers from the U.S. and Europe battle this weekend with the singular goal of capturing the Ryder Cup, two of the greats of the game square off to talk about what makes the biennial event so special.

Montgomerie: I have my own Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation named after my late mother, who died of lung cancer some 35 years ago now. You find that cancer has indeed touched everybody, and we set up an organization that could help those who weren’t in as fortunate a position as we were. So far, we’ve raised more than US$7 million and built two support centers —one in Aberdeen and one in Glasgow. I’m sorry to say those centers have been very successful, unfortunately.
