French authorities halted public transport in a desperate attempt to restore order following three fiery nights of riots after a teenager was shot and killed by police at a traffic stop
In the centre of the southern city of Marseille, France's second largest, rioters looted a gun store on Friday night and stole some hunting rifles but no ammunition, Marseille police said. One individual was arrested with a rifle likely coming from the store, police said. The store was now being guarded by police.
"The next hours will be decisive and I know I can count on your flawless efforts," Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin wrote to firefighters and police officers, seeking to quell the unrest that has been breaking out after nightfall. More than 200 police were injured on Thursday night, and more than 900 people were arrested, Darmanin said, adding their average age was 17.
Looters ransacked shops including an Apple store in Strasbourg on Friday, a local official said. A source told Reuters several Casino supermarkets had also been looted. Macron left a European Union summit in Brussels early to attend a second cabinet crisis meeting in two days.and to disclose identities of users fomenting violence. Darmanin met representatives from Meta, Twitter, Snapchat and TikTok. Snapchat said it had zero tolerance for content that promoted violence.
"This is a moment for the country to seriously address the deep issues of racism and racial discrimination in law enforcement," spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani said.
