The Justice Department opened an investigation into conditions at four Mississippi prisons as the state’s correctional system contended with inmate deaths, gang violence and the resignation of its commissioner.
“The investigation will focus on whether the Mississippi Department of Corrections adequately protects prisoners from physical harm at the hands of other prisoners at the four prisons,” the department said Wednesday.
