The year-long spree hit stores across the county and elsewhere in the state, resulting in $1.5 million in losses
Four people have been charged in connection with an organized retail theft spree that targeted jewelry stores across San Diego County and elsewhere in the state and resulted in a loss of roughly $1.5 million in merchandise, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced Friday. Prosecutors have attributed 21 theft incidents to the group over a year-long period beginning in April 2023 at stores including Kay Jewelers, Zales, Banter by Piercing Pagoda, JCPenney and Marc Jacobs.
'This was not a couple of one-off instances, not your garden-variety shoplifting,' Bonta said at a press conference in San Diego Friday, flanked by members of several law enforcement agencies who partnered in the investigation. 'It was planned, it was organized, it was methodical.' No weapons were brandished during the crimes, but at one point there was a threat of the presence of a gun, Bonta said.
