Stevens died of complications from a stroke he suffered on Monday, according to the Supreme Court.

Retired Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, John Paul Stevens, a moderate Republican, died in a hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Tuesday. He was 99 years old.Supreme Court

"He passed away peacefully with his daughters by his side," the Supreme court said, adding that Steven is survived by his children, Elizabeth Jane Sesemann and Susan Roberta Mullen , as well as his nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
