He crossed in 1:02:00, a full minute behind his personal best.
“It was a race where I went out and did what I could,” said Lara, who struggled at the end. “And over the last , I just didn’t quite have it. I didn’t have the gear that the other guys did on the day. I did what I could and competed well.”
Based on his performance in the 2022 Houston Marathon, Lara became the first American to qualify for the 2024 U.S. marathon trials. In a few months Lara will compete in an undisclosed marathon. Sunday was a tune-up session for Lara, who last raced competitively last October in the Chicago Marathon. However, none of the victorious Kenyans ran under 2:10, whereas Ethiopians Kelkile Gezahegn and Bazu Worku, who prevailed in 2018 and 2020 , finished in 2:08:36 and 2:08:30 respectively. Ethiopians have posted the eight fastest times ever — and the only ones under 2:10, including the record 2:06:51 by Tariku Jufar in 2012.
