In a rural Kane County subdivision, New Jersey veteran Andy Lipkin, who died unexpectedly Sept. 5, 'became the man he knew he was meant to be.'
The last picture sent by Marine veteran Andy Lipkin to his wife, 13 hours before his unexpected death on Sept. 5.That’s not exactly the title the 53-year-old veteran of the United States Marine Corps was looking for when he moved from New Jersey into my subdivision seven years ago. But since then, Andy, who died unexpectedly in his home on Sept. 5 from an apparent heart attack, took on the role in ways that only added to his larger-than-life street persona.
I expected a polite no-thanks, maybe even an excuse or two. Instead what came back was more of a “Hell, yes! What time should I show up?” He brought with him not only a large bag of toys but also a sense of peace on Earth, which was desperately needed at that particular time in our family history. For the next half hour, with nothing but flashlights and a full moon to guide this magical narrative, Andy stood outside in the cold air passing out gifts while gently responding to a barrage of questions fueled by imagination and adrenalin that only a seasoned pro could handle.
It was a philosophy that became the driving force behind Andy’s bulldog efforts over the last year to obtain the best possible medical care for his oldest son, who was in the Navy when he was seriously injured in a South Carolina car accident.Andy was not one to tolerate incompetence or excuses on any bureaucratic or corporate level, say family and friends. When something needed to be done, he went straight to the top and would not take no for an answer.
