Harris County animal shelter staff warn of cruelty, plead with officials for autonomy
A dog up for adoption in the kennels at Harris County Pets Resource Center on Friday, Feb. 24, 2023 in Houston.urged county leaders on Tuesday to give the shelter direct autonomy amid concerns that animals are being treated inhumanely under the direction of county health officials.
“Almost every animal that leaves the shelter does so in worse condition than they arrived,” Alexx DeCrosta, a former lead veterinarian with Harris County Pets told commissioners. “Animals should not be doing better on the streets of Houston than...in a multi-million-dollar facility brought to you by the taxpayer."
Harris County Commissioner Adrian Garcia, whose district includes the shelter, said in an emailed statement to the Houston Chronicle that he would “keep an open mind” about a possible nonprofit model, but added that “accountability is important to me, and the present system has accountability built into it from top to bottom."
