The son of imprisoned former Gulf Cartel leader Osiel Cardenas-Guillen was sentenced to federal prison for attempting to smuggle assault weapons into Mexico.sentenced to federal prisonOsiel Cardenas-Salinas Jr., of Brownsville, pleaded guilty last year to attempting to purchase 10 assault rifles to export across the U.S. border. Cardenas-Salinas Jr. on March 23 was ordered to serve nine years in federal prison.

Cardenas-Salinas Jr. is the 31-year-old son of Osiel Cardenas-Guillen, the former head of the Gulf Cartel. Cardenas-Guillen is serving a 25-year sentence in federal prison.On April 22, 2021, Cardenas-Salinas and others attempted to buy five “AK-47 type rifles” and “five AR-15 type rifles,” according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of Texas.

An undercover operation in a Brownsville parking lot also uncovered that Cardenas-Salinas had instructed another person to cross into Mexico to pick up $15,000 for the weapons.
