Crosby's biggest party ever is coming next year when the town marks its 200th anniversary
A now retired Donna Swanson-Davenport spends her days with her grandson Edwin, and planning the 200th anniversary celebration for 2023.The rural encampment just north of present-day U.S. 90 in 1823 was nicknamed Lick Skillet by Humphrey Jackson who was among the 300 original colonists to settle Texas. According to folklore, the name came from a fireside phrase, “The East Texas oxen team drivers sipped the spring sweet water and licked their skillets clean.
“We didn’t know how many to plan for and I was so surprised to see a full chamber office with about 25 people show up to begin planning,” she said.“My dream is to have the biggest celebration Crosby has ever had. You don't turn 200 years very often,” she exclaimed. She's hoping that the parents of the students will shop and become customers at the businesses, then or in the future.“Back in the day, the only way you could get into the dance was with a button and we’ll do the same with ours,” Swanson said.
“We want to make this interactive and educational for students who need to learn about our history and traditions,” she said.Growing up in Crosby Both her grandmother and grandfather worked for a family on Almeda Road, she was a maid, and he was a chauffeur. Her dad came home from World War II and got married. He was both an electrician and plumber at the time.
“I finally told daddy, ‘Do you really want me kissing my dates on the streets of Crosby,’” she laughed. They bought the house and moved.
