Shaun Harper, a non-staff contributor, says his piece was mischaracterized. The Forbes Union says it wants more scrutiny of outside submissions.
A Forbes.com article from a contributor titled, “Will Surviving Gunfire Be Donald Trump’s Next Appeal To Black Voters?” sparked controversy and intense online backlash. The piece by University of Southern California professor and self-described DEI expert Shaun Harper, who is Black, drew swift backlash online
and a rebuke from Forbes’ editorial union. Some called it “sick and twisted,” while others said the article was “insanely offensive” and race baiting. The backlash called into question how the piece could have been published and what the business magazine’s editorial policy is for contributors — writers who are not on staff.
In an email, Harper told The Washington Post that his story was mischaracterized, writing, “Many people who only see my article’s headline are mistaking “Appeal” with “makes Trump appealing to Black voters.” Harper said that’s the opposite of what he wrote.denounced the story on X saying, “This post does not represent who we, @ForbesUnion, are as a newsroom, or our ethical and journalistic principles.
