Jackson Merrill hits first big-league homer, Fernando Tatis Jr. also goes deep, but Padres trail early after Cardinals score 4 runs in first 2 innings against Matt Waldron

The Padres will turn to the frontline members of their starting rotation again beginning Tuesday. They need to get some innings from them. Early in a season is a time to watch trends more than the standings, and the Padres are using their bullpen quite a bit through the first seven games of 2024. A 6-2 loss to the Cardinals on Monday completed the Padres’ first run through their entire five-man rotation. That means there is plenty of time for things to get better — and get better they must.

The Padres have had a starter get to the sixth inning twice in seven games, and Joe Musgrove is the only one to record an out in the sixth. Their starting pitcher has failed to get to the fifth inning four times. Waldron was the second in a row to go just four innings. He did throw two pitches in the fifth, allowing a single to Nolan Arenado before being pulled for Jhony Brito. Waldron, who finished with seven strikeouts, threw his knuckleball a lot. It was good a lot.
